January 2012 Weather in Review

Milder than usual weather came to South Central Texas in January 2012. January 2012 was the mildest January since January 2006 at Austin, Del Rio, and San Antonio. The range of daily highs and lows in January 2012 stayed in a narrower range than usual for January, with less extremes between warm and cold. Although the high, low, and mean monthly averages were warmer than usual, the warmest days in January did not set record daily highs. January 2012 was the 12th warmest January at San Antonio from 1885 to 2012; the 18th warmest at Austin Mabry from 1854 to 2012; a tie with January 2004 for the 21st warmest January at Austin Bergstrom from 1943 to 2012; and a tie with January 1980 for the 19th warmest January at Del Rio from 1906 to 2012. Although January 2012 had its share of cloudy days, more sunny days came in the month compared to December. This helped to make the average daily highs for the month warmer than usual. The average daily high of 66.8 at Austin Bergstrom was the 9th warmest average high for January at Austin Bergstrom, while the average daily high of 66.8 was the 11th warmest average daily high for Austin Mabry in January. The average high of 68.3 at San Antonio in January 2012 tied with January 1921 for the 10th warmest average daily high at San Antonio in January. The coldest lows in January came on the 13th and 14th. The monthly lows in January 2012 were not as cold as the coldest lows at most location in December. The exceptions were at Austin Bergstrom, where the low on January 14th of 22 tied the low of 22 for December, on December 7th, and the low of 26 at San Antonio Stinson on January 14th tied the December 2011 monthly low of 26 on December 7, 2011.

Rainfall amounts for January 2012 improved from January 24th to the 31st. After the driest non overlapping one year period at Austin Mabry and 5th driest non overlapping one year period at San Antonio from October 2010 to September 2011, an improving trend of monthly rainfall was observed from October 2011 to January 2012. At Del Rio August 2010 to July 2011 was the 3rd driest non overlapping one year period for Del Rio. January 2012 rainfall was above normal at Austin; New Braunfels, and San Antonio to below normal at Del Rio, Hondo, and Burnet. January 2012 was the 4th wettest January at Austin Bergstrom from 1943 to 2012, with 7.30 inches of rain; the 16th wettest at Austin Mabry from 1856 to 2012, with 4.70 inches of rain; and the 13th wettest January at San Antonio from 1871 to 2012, with 3.99 inches of rain. Rainfall at Del Rio International Airport came to 0.50 inches in January 2012, less than the January 1981 to 2010 30 Year Normal of 0.72 inches.

A severe storm and flood event came on January 24th and 25th. A storm system formed over the Southwest U.S. on Monday, January 23 and moved across South Central Texas on January 25th. Scattered showers and isolated Thunderstorms came during the day on Tuesday, January 24th. A few severe storms developed Tuesday on the 24th, and produced hail over portions of the Austin Metro Area. More numerous storms came the night of Tuesday the 24th to the following morning on Wednesday, January 25th, mainly from 10 PM January 24 to 8 AM January 25, when a Mesoscale Convective System brought thunderstorms to South Central Texas. Some of these thunderstorms were severe, and brought damaging winds, hail, a few tornadoes, and areas of heavy rain. Widespread 2 to 5 inch rains were observed east of U.S. Highway 281, including a bull’s-eye of 5 to 10 inches of rain over eastern Hays, Caldwell, and Bastrop Counties. The heaviest rain was 9.35 inches 2.4 miles west-northwest of Bastrop and 9.29 inches 4.4 miles southwest of Uhland. New daily record rainfall amounts were set on January 25 at Austin Mabry, with 3.14 inches; at Austin Bergstrom, with 5.66 inches; and at San Antonio, with 2.94 inches. The 5.66 inches of rain at Austin Bergstrom on January 25 broke the daily record for the month of January, of 5.01 inches observed on January 9, 1991, and was the 8th wettest day of record for Austin Bergstrom from 1943 to January 2012. The 3.14 inches of rain at Austin Mabry was less than the January daily record of 4.41 inches on January 9, 1991. The 2.94 inches of rain at San Antonio on January 25 was a daily record for the month of January, breaking the previous daily record for January of 2.72 inches on January 18, 1968.

The 90 Day Outlook from February 2012 to April 2012 shows a 50 percent chance of being warmer than usual from February to April; a 33.3 percent chance of being near normal; and a 16.7 percent chance of being cooler than normal. The February 2012 to April 2012 90 Day rainfall outlook over South Central Texas shows a 40 to 50 percent chance of being drier than usual from February to April; a 33.3 percent chance of near normal rain; and a 16.7 to 26.7 percent chance of above normal rain.
