Wireless Emergency Alerts coming to your cellphone

The Wireless Emergency Alert system is rolling out.  It’s a combine effort from wireless carriers, FEMA and the FCC to get emergency information to cellphones based on location.

The National Weather Service will use the system starting this month to broadcast weather alerts. Here in Central Texas, that means you could get flash flood warnings and tornado warnings right to your cellphone based on what county you’re in (even if you’re just driving through).

You’ll automatically start receiving the alerts if your phone is WEA compatible but you can opt out.

We talked with Paul Yura from the NWS office in New Braunfels about the alerts here.
