A few days ago, a giant solar flare bigger than the width of planet Earth erupted on the sun. According to NASA, the flare was the equivalent of a “tsunami on the surface of the sun”.

A solar flare of this magnitude could have easily caused a massive disruption of worldwide power systems and electronics equipment on our planet. The only saving grace, according to scientists, was that the flare was pointed away from Earth.
