Severe thunderstorm brings overnight lightning, wind & heavy rain

A weak, rare July cool front swept through central Texas early Saturday morning bringing a spectacular lightning show, heavy rain, and strong winds to the Austin Metro.

A wind gust of 59 miles per hour was recorded at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport at 12:25am, technically making the storm severe (just above the criteria of 58+ mph) – although a severe thunderstorm warning was never issued on the cell.

Lightning temporarily disabled the 911 call center in Elgin as the storms swept through at 12:55am Saturday.

These thunderstorms also dumped heavy rain in a short time period, resulting in minor street flooding in Elgin around 1am.

Here are some of the more impressive rainfall totals overnight – mainly concentrated near I-35.
