Super Duper Tuesday!

February 5th, 2008 - 6:03 pm by Jenny Hoff · 2 Comments

Between my television duties today, I’ll be liveblogging the Feb. 5th results as they come in, so check back here frequently!

By 2pm-Huckabee named winner of West Virginia and will take home 18 delegates. McCain’s followers teamed up with Huckabee’s to oust Romney’s chances of winning the state. Its getting dirty in the wild, wild west.

5:58pm-Barack Obama is the projected winner in Georgia, picking up 9 delegate votes. Clinton gets three.

6:25pm-McCain projected winner of Republican primary in Georgia, with 36% of the vote.

7:02pm-Top Democratic candidate is Obama with 79 delegates and the top Republican candidate is McCain with 93 delegates.

7:11pm-McCain is the projected winner in Connecticut with 27 delegates. In Oklahoma, Clinton is the projected winner with 50% of the vote. And, in Massachusetts, Romney is the projected winner with 5 delegates.

7:15pm- In Illinois, Obama takes the Democratic primary with 16 delegates and McCain is the projected winner for the Republican primary.

7:21pm- In New Jersey, McCain holds 52 delegates for the Republican Primary.

7:33- Surprise, surprise-Clinton is the projected winner of Arkansas for the Democrats, Huckabee takes the state home for the Republicans

7:36-McCain is projected winner of New Jersey

7:39-Romney wins his state of Massachusetts..would have been pretty embarrassing otherwise.

Current Delegate Standings (including Super Delegates)

Democrats-need 2,025

Clinton: 253

Obama: 199

Republicans-need 1,191

McCain-190

Romney-99

Huckabee-54

Paul-6

7:45-McCain takes home Illinois for the Republicans…have I said that already?

7:47-Ok, here are the projections I’m seeing at the moment. Clinton gets Tennessee and Oklahoma

7:50-We just heard over the scanner that Clinton has won New York, it will be officially projected at 8pm.

7:57-I’m seeing Clinton as the projected winner of New Jersey

7:59-NBC predicting Clinton wins Massachusetts

Exit poll highlights as reported by NBC:

In the Democratic races, Barack Obama led with 8 in 10 black voters and Hillary Rodham Clinton led with 6 in 10 Hispanic voters. Obama led among white men, while Clinton led among white women. Overall, Obama led among men and Clinton led among women, although her advantage among women appeared smaller than was seen in early primary states. In the Republican races, John McCain led among men. He had only a small lead over Mitt Romney among women.

Fascinating, isn’t it?

8:05-They’re calling Huckabee the party splitter, but he may end up being the comeback kid. CNN is projecting him the winner of my home state, Missouri!

FACTOID-Don’t get tricked by the number of delegates. Many are Superdelegates, which mean they make their decision on a candidate at the National Convention. Different news agencies are predicting who they vote for based on the returns from those delegates home states.

8:13-McCain claims Montana

Media Note: Television stations and online political sites are competing for viewers right now as much as those candidates are competing for voters. So, vote here!

8:18-Just got a call from a crew out on the field. Obama supporters drinking it up at Scholtz’s say they think it will come down to Texas. Huckabee supporters partying it up a little cheaper at Mr. Gatti’s pizza have the same prediction.

8:20-Wow, McCain predicted winner in New York and Clinton gets New Joisey.

8:29-A little political analysis: Huckabee is a spoiler for Romney by coming in so close in many of the Southern states and “stealing” away those votes; Hillary gets Mass. despite the great Kennedy endorsement (and John Kerry). Each candidate is getting their own state at the moment.

8:32-Obama wins Delaware

Disclaimer-These are all projections, so don’t hold me to these numbers..they are courtesy of our national media friends

8:34-Updated Numbers

Clinton: 279 Delegates

Obama: 210 Delegates

McCain: 309 Delegates

Romney: 99 Delegates

Huckabee: 54 Delegates

Paul: 6 Delegates

8:40-More than 700,000 more Californians have registered to vote in this election than in 2004… returns could be later than usual

8:42-Dan Bartlett, Bush’s former counselor to President Bush, was just in our studios. He says Obama will probably win Texas and McCain will “likely win the national nomination.” He says McCain will emerge as the frontrunner tonight as the Democrats continue to battle it out. He believes that will unify the Republican party while the Democrats split it with political bickering. This, of course, coming from a Republican communications director keep in mind.

8:59-Obama wins Alabama

9:03-Obama wins North Dakota and Utah

9:06-Tim Russert is saying Huckabee is a much bigger spoiler for McCain than Romney is (Romney is only winning Minnesota and Massachusetts)

9:09-Could Kelly O’Donnell on NBC look any more Irish with the red hair, blue eyes and O’Donnell as a last name?

9:17-Republicans hope Clinton will get nomination because they believe she’s more polarizing and, therefore, more beatable.

9:20-Bill Richardson, on NBC right now, just admitted he munched on Mexican food with Bill Clinton during the superbowl (still trying to remind us, he is Mexican despite his last name). But, he won’t officially endorse either Democratic candidate (perhaps Clinton should have splurged for more enchiladas).

9:24-Here’s a quick analysis of the race, thus far, from one of our political experts in the newsroom, Kimberley Reeves:

“Probably the most interesting is the real non-performance of Mitt Romney in the Republican primaries. As Kelly Fero told us, “Hope he can make that $35 million back.” This really has been a battle between Huckabee and McCain. Of course, what we’ve seen so far primarily is the Southern states. On the Democratic side, Texas is going to be a player. Too many toss ups. Clinton picked up the Northeast. Obama is doing well in the South among blacks and evangelicals. And his message is getting through in places that have yet to be called, like Idaho and Minnesota. It looks like Clinton’s has concentrated her resources and ads on the states with more delegates.”

9:31-Give it to my home state for making headlines for being so neck and neck! Go Missouri! Its expected, there will be a projection out of there soon and in the past, Missouri has been “the great predictor” for nominees.

9:33-NBC is predicting Obama wins Kansas

9:42-I’ve got to go get ready to do my bit on t.v., so tune in to KXAN!

9:44-Wait a minute! Huckabee takes Georgia, not McCain!

10:26-Huckabee and McCain neck and neck in Missouri, with Huckabee leading with less than 200 votes. Hillary is ahead of Obama with 50% to Obama’s 47%.

10:39-O.k, I’m getting tired. Here’s a list of the state’s reporting and who won in each one. The ones not reporting yet are California, Colorado, Alaska and New Mexico.

I have to be back at work in the morning, so g’nite y’all! There will be plenty to blog about tomorrow. And, as always, please feel free to leave comments on what you thought of tonight. I’ll respond.
