It seems teen pregnancy isn’t just the rage in the glitzy world of L.A. anymore, but even among daughters of ultra-conservative politicians. Sarah Palin confirmed today that her 17 year old daughter, Bristol, is 5 months pregnant. She plans to have the baby and marry the baby’s daddy… all by her own accord (I’m sure mumsy went through all the options with her). All of a sudden a campaign that seemed historical yet a bit of a yawn has now taken a turn for the “Hills” (A reference directed toward our tween readers).

If Governor Palin (let alone Senator McCain) knew of this when McCain selected her as his running mate, then two questions come to my childless-adult-male mind:
1. How could she possibly think this wasn’t going to be discovered by the press and/or the blogosphere? And
2. Considering Question 1, is it appropriate to knowingly subject your pregnant unwed teenage daughter to this kind of scrutiny? I feel so sorry for this child — she was probably already wracked with guilt, if not remorse, and she certainly did not bargain for this sudden notoriety. And despite assurances that Gov. Palin plans to love and support Bristol, Gov. Palin has just signed up to spend most of the remainder of her daughter’s pregnancy riding on an airplane visiting three or four states a day that have more electoral votes than Alaska.
Governor Palin has many admirable qualities, and if we’re to believe the worst about “Troopergate,” then obviously she is fiercely loyal to her own family members. I hope I’m not being sexist about this — please call me out if you think I am — I just can’t help but think that if I were Bristol’s dad, and if I knew of her pregnancy before John McCain asked me to run for Vice President of the United States, I would have gracefully declined rather than to put her through this ordeal.

I think Palin has kick some serious media ass. She’s young and the ole’ boy network work is running scared.
