Organic Shopping Online

June 30th, 2008 by Todd Mette in Uncategorized

Recently I came across a website that makes it easier for me to shop for organic foods. The best part is that I can do it online and shipping is FREE! Greenling is an online provider of fresh organic foods.

Why organic you ask? Organic fruits and veggies are grown in nutrient-rich soil which, making them more nutritious than conventional produce. They also don’t contain toxic chemicals like conventionally-grown produce. Greenling lists other reasons why consumers should start buying organic produce on their website. The site also has a page listing tips and recipes.

It doesn’t take too long to set up an account on the website and start adding fresh organic produce to your shopping basket! Everything is priced pretty reasonable and it’s hard to beat free delivery these days with rising gas prices.

Twittering Away

June 27th, 2008 by Charlie Ray in Uncategorized

KXAN has fully embraced Twitter and I’m so excited to show you. Twitter? Twha? Ok, let me back up…For those of you that don’t know…Twitter is a micro-blogging site where you can keep up with your “friends” and provide quick updates for those that follow you online.

kxantwitter.jpgWith an account you can, in 140, words answer the one question: “What are you doing?” and update your network. Tweeting, as it’s called, can even be done from your phone or instant messenger. Sound like something just the kids are doing? Nope, even the New York Times is on the Twitter and it’s great to get the news as fast as the newsroom even knows about it. That is what our own Shane Allen in the newsroom does and I’m loving it. As soon as that scanner goes off or he gets a news tip it is on our Twitter feed.

If you are a news junkie like I am, follow us on Twitter…we’re KXAN_News and you know, keep getting your local news first from KXAN…cause that’s how we roll.

And there’s our Twitter feed right there on the left…see it? That’s the latest things we’ve posted from the newsroom. See that headline? Did you even know that yet?

Declare Inbox Zero

June 24th, 2008 by Charlie Ray in Uncategorized

I have been spreading the word about managing your email inbox to all who will listen lately. Some are surely tired of hearing me rail against the evils of email, but I am on a crusade. I receive a very high volume of email so I am always looking for ways to get myself away from my inbox. Merlin Mann gave a presentation to Google employees on how to reach what he calls “Inbox Zero” and I think he’s my new hero.

The presentation is an hour long, but totally worth watching…I mean…he gave this thing to Google employees!

You know I’m not a journalist, right?

June 23rd, 2008 by Charlie Ray in Uncategorized

I mean, I might say I am a writer because I’ve done a few features and columns in my time…but interviewer? Not so much. That did not stop me from interviewing the cast of Altar Boyz last Friday. KXAN and The CW partner with the Zach and I thought I would go down and have a chat with the cast. We did learn that we need to buy a tripod for our camera in the web department, but that was a side note.

You can read the story online here, and here’s the video.

Block the heat

June 17th, 2008 by Charlie Ray in Uncategorized

My house was built in 1924. While it is very charming, I also know that it is extremely energy INefficient. My air conditioner is working awfully hard to keep the house at 78 degrees and the single pane original glass windows on the West side of the house aren’t helping matters.

The instructables site may have a weekend project for me, though. This lesson on how to make heat blocking curtains appeals to me as I try to reduce my energy costs and keep my house cool for the summer. It’s a step up from putting aluminum foil on the windows.

Viral Video

June 13th, 2008 by Charlie Ray in Uncategorized

Someone sent me a video that showed four people using their cell phones to pop popcorn. There are several of these viral videos on YouTube getting millions of page views. It was really hard to believe. After checking out snopes.com to see if this wasn’t some sort of viral hoax, we confirmed it was indeed a fake.

Just to prove to y’all it was a fake we did a re-enactment right here in my office.

Turns out the video is part of a marketing campaign. It’s interesting how advertisers use the web to create viral content promoting their products and how they catch on around the globe. Genius. It’s sparked many response videos and blog entries.

You can check out the most popular videos on YouTube here. I also check out Google’s most popular key word searches. Today it’s all about Friday the 13th superstitions…which I don’t have because I was born on a Friday the 13th and my Mom says it’s her lucky day!

Did you find my camera?

June 6th, 2008 by Charlie Ray in Uncategorized

I lost my camera last weekend in San Francisco. Luckily, I had been pulling the photos off every day and putting them on my computer so I didn’t lose a bunch of photos. But, it is a pretty expensive thing to lose. I found this website, Ifoundyourcamera.blogspot.com and I’m keeping an eye out to see if I see my face on the blog.

This is a great site! I love the happy endings I’m reading about where people that have lost their cameras have seen their photos on this site and been able to get it back. It really gives you faith in people and it’s a cool way to experience a worldwide community via the Internet.

The site reminds me of a site I used to visit a lot, Found. Found magazine online is a great collection of found notes, grocery lists and just random things people send in. It’s an interesting “slice of life” site.

I’ll race ya!

June 3rd, 2008 by Charlie Ray in Uncategorized

I take great pride in my typing skills. Now, I can race you to see how fast I really am. There’s an online game called TypeRacer that pits you against your friends, coworkers or random people on the Internet to put your skills to the test. A race that you can only win by typing faster than everyone else with no mistakes.

It’s ON!

That’s Private!

June 3rd, 2008 by Charlie Ray in Uncategorized

I believe where I go on the Internet is my business. Unfortunately, if you are not diligent about deleting your private data every time you go online then your browsing history is available for anyone to see. I saw this StealthSurfer that creates a portable computing environment on a flash drive and thought, “what a great idea!”

The StealthSurfer can keep your email, credit card numbers and passwords all in a secure environment. I’ve got to have one.

Even your cell phone can reduce your carbon footprint

I have two cell phones. One is for work and one is my personal phone. My work cell phone is a Blackberry Pearl and I love it, but at times I wish it would stop ringing and buzzing and vibrating as emails pour into my inbox. My personal phone is a Nokia flip phone. The only thing I use that phone for is making and receiving calls.  Remember when you used to use a phone for that?

Nokia has introduced a new phone that has all those things I don’t need, plus it’s pretty slick looking to me. The phone is made with over 50 percent renewable materials and comes in a box made of 60 percent recycled stuff. On the technical side, the Evolve’s charger is Nokia’s most efficient ever, delivering juice at a full 94 percent below Energy Star specifications.

The average lifespan of a cell phone is 18 months. With this phone, I would feel a little bit better about not using all those features.
