SXSW Saturday

Sorry for the late post but I took the day off on Monday.  Saturday my friend and I RSVP the Scion show at Stubb’s.  This was all electronica/Dj with exception of the first band.

Black Moth Super Rainbow (great name BTW) kicked the day and they were great.  This 5 piece used traditional instuments drums, bass, 2 people playing keys/moog/efx and a singer who sat on the side of the stage with a mic plugged into guitar effect peddles which he manipulated.  Think of some of Led Zepplin’s more trippy songs as a comparison.  BMSR was really good and I will be checking their music out soon.  http://www.blackmothsuperrainbow.com/

Next, was Mixhell from Brazil.  Dj tandem of Iggor Cavalera (Sepultura´s ex-drummer) and wife/producer Laima Leyton.  They describe their rowdy heavy beats as Ghettotech/Grindcore.  Occasionally, Iggor would jump on his drum set and play with the mix.  He threw a plastic cup of wine splashing onto the Stubb’s overhang and at another point he kicked over part of his drum set when some technical difficulties happened but kept playing on the high hat and snare.  Total rock n’ roll.  The crowd was dancing, and Mixhell was having a good time drinking red wine & red bull while spinning big beats.   http://www.myspace.com/mixhell

Direct from Germany Jence & Isi who make up Digitalism were the third act of this showcase.  No turntables for these guys just elaborate noise makers.  These are two opposite looking nerdy dudes one bigger with dark hair, the other smaller with blond hair.  They added some vocals on a few songs and kept the crowd moving with the dance beats. You can check them out at http://www.myspace.com/digitalism

The last act of the show was Chromeo.  Dave 1 (Canadian) and P-Thugg (NY) duo debuted at SXSW 07 and made a big impression.  They play pop/electronica mixed in with some 80’s.  Dave 1 sings most of the songs, plays guitar or bass.  P-Thugg plays the keys and various sound effects.  On most of the songs he used a voice tube that works through his keyboard to create the 70’s/80’s sound like Zapp (you might know him from California Dreamin by Tupac).  Chromeo’s Tenderoni was a crowd pleaser.  They had everyone movin to their beats for the entire hour they performed.  http://www.myspace.com/chromeo

After this we went and got something to eat across the street at Jamie’s Spanish Village.  Tex-Mex yummm.

We took the two legged express down to Waterloo Park to The Mess With Texas 2 free concert with 3 different stages which featured NOFX, The Breeders and Simian Mobile Disco headlining.  We saw Yeasayer (ecclictic dual vocal goodness), Black Mountain (70’s rock) and then cruised.  The dance party earlier in the afternoon took the energy out of me.  Good fun all the way around.

Rock Band Virgin

So I know I am behind the times but I played Rock Band for the first time this weekend.  I started on bass.  My game play began at awful and rose to mediocre.  I switched to lead vocals and did pretty well.  Mainly because I knew most of the songs that we were playing.  The songs we did best were Black Hole Sun, Creep, (Wanted) Dead or Alive and Say It Ain’t So.  Is this a game for people who love rock music but never learned to play an instrument or a fun outlet people who know how to play already?  That game is really fun and I can see how it can be addictive too.  World Tour 08!

Weekend

Here are some entertainment picks for the weekend.  If you are into harder indie rock, this evening Emo’s has Young Heart Attack and Amplified Heat.  As far as the big screen is concerned Semi Pro, The Other Boleyn Girl, and Penelope open this weekend.  These are all getting marginal reviews.  If you want to see a movie this weekend and don’t like Will Farrell, period pieces, or quirky romcoms (romantic comedies) then you might want to catch up on the movies that won Oscars.  Also the Texas State Arts Festival is going on this weekend on the grounds of Bob Bullock State History Museum.  The usual for any Austin festival will be available:  live music, local food vendors, and around 100 artist who want to sell their paintings/sculptures/etc. to you.  So go out there, support an artist and display something cool in your house.  Have a good weekend ya’ll.

Crack That Whip

Occasionally we get promotional items for movies that are about to be released in theaters.  Earlier this week we received an item for the new Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.  Can you guess what they sent???  That’s right a 10 foot (fake) leather whip.  I’m not sure what we are going to do with it yet but now we have it, so beware.  The Austintainer wants to shoot some video in the parking lot of cracking of the whip.  We’ll see.

Shot Thru the Heart at Antone’sA benefit for Meals on Wheels was last night called Shot Thru the Heart at Antone’s.  The CW Austin was one of the proud sponsors of this event.  Skyrocket played all the great hits from the 70s and 80s (Rock the Casbah, Night Fever, Any Way You Want It, Dancing Queen, One Way or Another, All Out of Love).  These top flight musicians know how to get people on the dance floor.  If you want to read more about them, the other bands they are in or their extensive song selection, check out their myspace page http://www.myspace.com/skyrockettheband  It was a great night.  Thanks for the big crowd that came out and supported Meals on Wheels.

We hosted a Christmas Party at the chic new 2nd Street Fuego Lounge this past weekend. The staff kept the drinks flowing and DJ Jericho One kept the party thumpin’ as we kicked off the season with old and new friends.

Check out Fuego’s MySpace page for live music and DJ schedules. Be sure to tell Jason and the gang hello from us.

Photos of our party are on the right in our Flickr photo stream.

That’s right, we’ll be at the Austin Music Hall for Duran Duran tomorrow night. We’re going to go back in time to the era of big hair bands and synthesizers. We’ll have our camera, too, so get ready for some fashion wrongs…courtesy of The Pulse!

In case you don’t know why we’re Hungry Like The Wolf, check out the video.
